Biography

about my biography

Kalyan Gautam, popularly known as Dear Kalyan, has been working as a Radio Jockey since 1998 right from the time of the establishment of Nepal’s first FM Radio Station, 100 Mhz. In 1998, he devised a new radio program for FM radio stations. This very program gave him a new name ‘Dear Kalyan’, which became a catchword not only for listeners, but also for several radio jockeys working at various stations all over the country. They emulated Mr. Kalyan, and started fashioning their programs and presentations after the style he developed. He has continued to be a model presenter for many till this date.

The great democratic revolution of 1990 in Nepal, which reinstated parliamentary democracy, was also a revolution for the freedom of expression, besides being a political movement. FM stations became the medium for people to voice their concerns as soon as they were opened in the 1990s in the Nepalese society that was by and large closed and strictly censored before that.

Together with issues of general public concern, personal and individual tales and issues also needed a vent. Individual repressions were seeking a medium of purgation. Unsuccessful love affairs, tragedies and heartbreaks needed a vent. Dear Kalyan’s radio program “Mero Katha Mero Geet” (now “Mero Katha”) became that connecting link for those caught in such misfortunes. The program was based on true events where listeners sent their sad stories to Dear Kalyan to have their feelings aired and disseminated to thousands of unknown listeners across the nation with anonymity. This was a therapeutic approach, because the sufferers felt relieved after finding their personal tales shared. The program surprisingly became a counselling program for the youngsters and immediately became the most sought-after program in Nepal. Painful stories of failed marriages, racial discrimination, HIV-related discrimination and even the stories of the former Maoist guerrillas flooded the program. Each episode aired the true stories in Kalyan’s voice, accompanied by heart touching songs broadcasted in tandem with the stories. Now these episodes and many new ones are compiled in Dear Kalyan’s books Mero Katha Part 1, 2 and 3, and DVDs Part 1 through 10.

Dear Kalyan continues reaching out to his fans and listeners through social media like Facebook (Kalyan Gautam Fan Page “Dear Kalyan) and hundreds of YouTube videos followed by thousands. He has been producing and presenting his radio shows from New York City for Image FM 97.9 MHZ and his YouTube channel. Mr. Kalyan is also a novelist. He has written seven books. In 2012 he published a historical fiction Radio Chhap Salai based on the history of Nepali radio media. At present, he lives in New York City and is currently writing a next novel about two Chinese guys who were involved in Beijing Students’ Movement, 1989. After 1989 these two characters fled to the USA and since then, they have been working for more than two decades at a restaurant in Manhattan.

Mr. Kalyan has also worked as a consultant for many FM Stations opened throughout the nation. He guided many new FM stations in incorporation, administration, licensing processes, production, broadcast, logistics, trainings, facilities, infrastructure and training of the local talents as RJs. For his contributions, Mr. Kalyan has received many national-level awards, and felicitations. He has also worked as a member of the jury for competitions concerning radio events.

People have continued to send him their personal narratives from all over the world. At present, his program is aired through the website dearkalyan.com for global Nepali community.
